Jon and Kate announcement generates buzz

If you watch TLC, there’s no doubt you’ve seen the teases for the one-hour special “Jon and Kate Announcement” that will air in place of a regular “John & Kate Plus 8″ episode on June 22.

With the insane amount of media attention this family has gotten lately, this John and Kate announcement is sure to get tons of viewers — and tons of advertising dollars. Any advertiser seeking money to fund a commercial during the Jon and Kate announcement no doubt got some easy loans.

An opinionated public

Viewers, who will no doubt tune in to the John and Kate announcement Monday, have plenty of opinions about the Gosselin family. One of the big controversies has been whether the TV show exploits their children.

With all of the money the show draws, it is a full-time job for Jon and Kate, so it can certainly be argued that it is a full-time job for their children. With the kids on camera all the time, generating all kinds of money and paychecks for all kinds of people, it certainly can be argued that their kids are working a pretty rigorous schedule.

Connecting the dots

So, if the TV show generates tons of money through what some might argue is “child labor,” is that legal. Well, the Pennsylvania Department of Labor is currently investigating that. So, if the Jon and Kate announcement is an extension of that, should you tune in?

I don’t know whether the children will be in the special Jon and Kate announcement episode, but the fact that it’s an hour long makes me think that they probably will. What are Jon and Kate going to announce for an hour?

Counterargument

Of course, many people will say that the kids are just doing what they’d normally be doing, they just happen to be making money for it. I don’t think any adult would argue with being put in that situation. However, there’s also no doubt that the children have to endure a lot of things that normal children would not because of their fame.

As the children’s fame grows, so does the debate. After rumors of affairs, “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ took a huge leap in popularity. Advertisers, TLC and Jon and Kate no doubt are reaping the monetary benefits of their marital problems. Is that immoral? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

The bottom line

Whichever side of the argument you subscribe to regarding child labor, extramarital affairs, spanking and reality television in general, there’s no arguing this: The Jon and Kate announcement is going to be a big, huge moneymaker.

Who knows what they are going to announce? Most people think it’ll be about a divorce or separation. Personally, I predict the announcement will be something along these lines:

Dear public,

We don’t care how much it costs us to terminate our contracts. We can’t take this anymore. After this hour-long Jon and Kate announcement special make us a ton of money, we’re shutting off the cameras. Forever. Thanks and get a life.

Sincerely,

Jon and Kate

Of course, for the sake of full disclosure, I should share the fact that I have never watched “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” so I am not a very good source for predictions on what will happen on the Jon and Kate announcement. Maybe that’s just what I would do if I were in their poisition. They’ve probably made enough money to live on for the rest of their lives. Kate’s got two best-selling books already. Why not pull the plug?
