Stephon Marbury’s web show seeks sponsors
During his suspension from the Knicks, Stephon Marbury made more money than I will make in my entire life.
So the Stephon Marbury web show is in full swing. “Starbury TV,” as he calls it, promises “Stephon Marbury Live 24/7.” Honestly, I don’t have time to fact-check this, so I will just take his word for it.
The Stephon Marbury web show is seeking products for placement. In one particularly popular Starbury TV clip in which the basketball, ahem, “star” eats Vaseline, he says for $10 million he’ll advertise your product on his show and for $50 million he’ll leave it on his shoulder all day.
Perhaps some yacht makers out there will front the cash for Stephon Marbury’s web show to feature a 100-footer sitting on his shoulder? If they need help getting the money, they can always use internet loans.
Who is Stephon Marbury?
Oh, you remember Stephon Marbury. He’s the tattoo-covered former Boston Celtics player who was paid tens of millions of dollars to not play or practice with the New York Knicks for a while.
Well, he’s a free agent now, and clearly he has decided that he needs to continue making an eight-figure salary. With Starbury TV he is taking a bit of a different tack. It appears the 13-year NBA veteran is trying to make money through his online reality show.
Wish him luck; he’ll need it
It appears that my previous assumption that certain cable networks will make anything into a reality show might have been mistaken. Once I started seeing reality shows about celebrities who were celebrities because they got kicked off of some other reality show I thought that was it for sure. I wondered how much they’d pay me if I mounted a web cam in the guinea pig cage.
But either the producers of said reality shows, which will remain nameless (you know who you are), really do have some scruples or Stephon Marbury is just not much of a business man. Instead of going to the producers of “Newlyweds” and saying “Hey, you can set up cameras in my house and turn it into a reality show,” he has decided to go live online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Or so he says. Again, I am not checking on that.
Prove me wrong, Starbury TV
So it is true that Stephon Marbury’s web show has indeed developed a following. However, I sincerely doubt anyone out there is watching ever minute. If you are, stop it. Stop it right now. Go get a job.
Or, better yet, capture clips and sell ads that will run right after you hit “play” on YouTube and right before Starbury starts crying on camera over a song. What, you didn’t see that? Oh, here it is:
Anyway, back to the point I was trying to make. I think this is a terrible business plan. I do not think anyone will pay $10 million or $50 million for their products to appear on Stephon Marbury’s web show. No one is going to watch all day, let alone enough people that a savvy marketing agent would leave a $10 million advertizing purchase up to Stepon Marbury’s judgement of when peak viewing time is for his online masterpiece.
Starbury TV, help is on the way
Unfortunately, I am sure Stephon Marbury’s web show will end up making money. A lot of money. Someone who is a smart, savvy business man will see the earning potential inherent in Starbury TV and will guide Stephon Marbury’s web show to financial success — for a fee.
